Review of The Bludgeoning and The Burning From The Package - Issue 23-29 May 2002

"Inside the small but charismatic bar awaited so much talent from the generation of today. First to start the night of death was Forced to Submit with their short, raw and brutal execution, followed by Falciform who played their technical sagas of war with tight riffs of chaotic madness.

Next up was Graymalkin (AK) with two singers with tormenting screams and a pit of doom. No other words to describe this band but incredibly insane. What better way to end the night with Wellington's Backyard Burial, the essence of classic death, this band just gets better and better.

Death still lingered in mind for the second night. Wellington's Christian Combustion were a mishmash of corpse paint, executioner's masks and frenzied black metal screams. It was a good effort from the group of four, despite a member of the crowd jumping on the stage and removing a mask or two in the middle of the performance.

The new singer in Hamilton band Bloodwreath was amazing, his screams piercing. A great set from them with their last song, a new and as yet unnamed track being one of the best.

The crowd was entranced by Zirconium, fronted by Jolene Tempest, resplendent with her long red hair and black gears. The eerie sounds of the violin coupled with her growls and screams created complete metal mayhem.

Dawn of Azazel were a "militant audio assault", a combination of death, black, thrash and grind core all thrown into the frypan. An awesome performance delivered from behind ghoulish gas masks.

The last band of the night, Skuldom from Auckland, featured another female singer, a drummer and a bassist. All previous misgivings about a band with no guitarist were shattered when they took the stage.

Over a two night epic of nine bands and a DJ full of demonic tunes it was satisfying that for a mere $15 one got to see fiends pouring in so much to keep death and black alive."

The Bludgeoning and The Burning, Jason's twin nights of aural onslaught, are starting to take more shape. Here are some band names I can mention: Dawn of Azazel, Skuldom, Forced To Submit, Greymalkin, Bloodwreath, Backyard Burial and of course Zirconium and Falciform. No promises, but all these bands have expressed great interest in performing so we'll just see how things pan out with leave etc. So don't forget, the 9th and 10th of May, when extreme metal takes over the town.

2002:03:05

Some advance warning: Zirconium are playing with Premature Autopsy and Backyard Burial on April 13th at Valve. Be there.

2002:03:04

Everything is sussed for Manifestation in Metal 2, all bands are confirmed (Falciform, Misled By Lies, Monsterworks, and Procarsa) and posters will be appearing from later this week.

But the big news for this update is: The Bludgeoning and The Burning. We have booked Valve for the 9th and 10th of May, but we have yet to confirm all the bands. Rest assured we will be letting you know as soon as all the details are sorted. The concept is a night of deathmetal, and a night of blackmetal. When was the last time Wellington had two nights in a row of quality metal entertainment? Stay tuned.

MANIFESTATION IN METAL 2 - 15 MARCH 2002

Building on the success of the previous show, we're doing it all again. This time with Misled By Lies from Hamilton, Hayden's new Sepultura covers band Procarsa and old favourites Monsterworks. More info in the gigs section. We are also planning a two night gig for later in the year. The first night will be a pure Deathmetal night, and the second will feature the blackest of Blackmetal. Some bands we're thinking of from out of town are the likes of Dawn of Azazel (Auck), Bloodwreath (Ham), and Skuldom (Auck). We'll keep you posted when we have more details.

MANIFESTATION IN METAL - 21 DEC 2001

The gig that was advertised as our Contagion CD release gig was given more of an 'event' status when it took on the name MANIFESTATION IN METAL. Fortunately the crowds didn't seem to be scared away by the false and malicious advertising that referred to Falciform as "Hard Rockers" and they came along in droves. Unfortunately, Bloodwreath had to pull out 4 days before the gig, but fortunately the good people of Backyard Burial were able to take their place.

Shakhan got things going (as they inevitably do), and getting the crowd fired up nicely thank you. Unfortuantely, some technical difficulties marred Backyard Burial's performance but they did managed to churn through a few classics before it all went to custard.

Falciform up next, and tearing through material from Contagion and some newer stuff (One False Move and Cannibal Christ) much to the growing crowd's amusement. Chaos reigned. And the gods of metal said that it was good.

Zirconium finished the evening off with the ambient black metal of which has been making them a good name around the town of late. Jolene's inhuman roar complemented by Rosemary's meandering violin all wrapped up in a package of brutality provided by the boys on the REAL instruments of metal. Nice.

A top night, exceptional crowd, no dickheads, damn good. I say again, the Wellington crowd ROCK!

Cheers to all in attendance.

Purchase CONTAGION - Yes it's true! We have a few methods available to you. The first is to send US$10 to falciform@falciform.net with PayPal. PayPal is an online money go-between kinda place. If you have a creditcard, you can sign up and send money to anyone else with a Paypal account - Falciform for example. It's used by a lot of online retailers and auction sites etc so this probably wont be the only time you use it. Also send an email to falciform@falciform.net with your mail address so we know where to send it and when we've confirmed the PayPal transaction we'll send it off.

The 2nd option is to just send NZ$20 cash, cheque or money order to Falciform, PO BOX 5451, Wellington, New Zealand, along with your address of course and we'll send it out.

Any questions, contact me.

Wellington Supermetal Warriors Tour: 22 Nov 01 to 24 Nov 01 - The Wellington Super Warriors tour of 3 cities in the North Island turned out to be a great success. FALCIFORM, MONSTERWORKS and BACKYARD BURIAL on the road together proved to be a riotous time both on a off stage, and quite gratifying it must be said.

Thursday November 22nd we made the hell trip to Auckland to play at the Voodoo Lounge. Unfortunately the advertised support act PROMISE OF BLOODSHED were unable to perform, so were replaced by PRISON DEATH FUX. The intriguing trio, grindy/punky/electronic chaos, got the night started real good. The Supermetal Warriors MW, BB and finally FALCIFORM all put on wicked sets to a satisfyingly sized crowd (although a bit docile….what is it with Auckland crowds??) and good venue meant a great (and f*cking HOT) night was had by all….the touring bands all pleased to have some a bit of merchandise too. Big cheers to PRISON DEATH FUX for playing at kinda short notice (and sorting us out a place to crash).

Friday took us down to Hamilton to crank it up with local heroes BLOODWREATH and MISLED BY LIES. All the Supermetal Warriors putting on blistering sets at a less than perfect venue but to an appreciative crowd. Of course, the locals went most hard-out to BLOODWREATH who, with their hyperspeed deathgrind stylings, impressed all and sundry.

The gig New Plymouth on Saturday night at Flicks Bar (coupled with stories of the Taranaki Strangler) proved to be an unusual affair with the Supermetal Warriors hooking up with punk bands HORROR STORY, FLESH D-VICE and HELL F*CKEN RUMBLE. But the extremes of Death metal intertwined with the (ramblings? churnings? ploddings? of the) Punk bands made for an entertaining evening. Big cheers to Mark Hamill, who was on tour with FLESH D-VICE, for taking care of the sound for the evening (crusty PA’s everywhere!). Big cheers to Nigel of HORROR STORY for the advertising. Big cheers to Sean and Nicki for the party afterwards.

All in all, a cool tour. Shame the crowds just aren’t the same as they are in Wellington!

Fear not, Northerners, we shall return.

Zirconium News - Until they get a website/communication method of their own, there will be occasional Zirconium news here. If you're confused about who the hell Zirconium are, they are a blackmetal band featuring Nathan and Jason. Click the old news link for more info about them. They have a couple of gigs coming up: this friday November 9th as part of "The Drill" at Indigo, and then December 7th at The Valve.

Southern Destruction Tour - The tour went okay. Only okay? Read on.

No gig in Christchurch due to the Loft closing but we drank a bit there and managed to find a couple of bogans sitting on the footpath.

Dunedin with WhiteThrash was cool. Very crazy band, hardcore punk stuff with lots of energy and humour. The third band pulled out but we went hard and put on a good show for the reasonably small crowd.

Unfortunately we missed quite a bit of Cherrystock. We saw one metal band - Hatred - but there seemed to be a lot of trashy punk bands. We went on last, being told that we had 15 minutes to play. We hadn't travelled 1000 kilometres for such a short amount of time so we played further into the darkness to a depleted crowd of 200 or so. We played mostly songs off the new CD Contagion, finishing with Infecting the Crypts.

We had been asked to play at the after party but when we went to grab our gear the Barman told us that he was shutting the place down and that no more bands would be playing tonight, so we only got 25 minutes of fame in Inversexual. It wasn't too cool to walk past that venue later and hear the sounds of live metal wafting into the night air, well after the barman had "shut it down".

Thanks go to the Tuatara Lodge for the excellent accomodation, Jay the glazed cherry, WhiteThrash, Indifference, and most of all Logan the Bogan and AJ the funneller our southern groupie, you guys made our tour!

www.NZMetal.com - nothing there yet (and I mean nothing) but remember the name. What is NZmetal.com you ask? At the moment it is just a name, but I have big things planned for it. NZMetal.com is going to be a two pronged attack on the current New Zealand Metal internet presence.

Prong 1: I am going to sell webspace to NZ Metal bands and affiliates at a discount rate. I have found a place that I can buy space from for cheap by buying in reasonably large quantities. Currently I am looking at putting together a deal that includes:

-100megs of space
-unlimited email accounts
-web administration interface
-and the proverbial more

All this for probably around $10 a month. I am thinking I will have to include a one-off setup fee ($30 maybe) but this will also include a domain name.

My aim for this is to provide NZ Metal bands the opportunity to have their own web presence - no more of this crap free hosting on GeoCities etc where you end up with a site covered in other people's advertising. Yes, there is a cost associated with this, but $10 a month is a very small amount when you split it between 3-5 band members :>

And now the second and seperate Prong 2: I want NZMetal.com to become a central hub for all the NZ Metal bands and affiliates, regardless of whether you are actually hosted on it or not. I think NZmetal.orcon.net has a similar idea, but I see the two sites as complementing each other. NZMetal.com won't be much more than a collection of links and maybe a little bit of other content. I'll leave the news, tourdates, band profiles, and discussion to nzmetal.orcon.net, which will of course have a prominent link from NZMetal.com.

So there you have it. I am at the very beginning of this project at the moment so don't expect to see much for a few weeks. Also, I wont be pushing it too much on Falciform.net, as I want the two to remain as seperate as possible and I am aware that this is a large amount of news for very little about Falciform.

If you have any questions, suggestions, ideas, or if you want to be hosted, let me know.

2001:09:26

Here's an update about other projects of some of the members of FALCIFORM...

DARKNESS DESCENDS

ZIRCONIUM, the Black Metal outfit formed by Nathan and Jason earlier this year unleashed its darkness for the first time upon and unsuspecting audience at Underground Arts. On 1st September the show "Tattoos and Voodoo", also featuring another new Wellington band Residue, turned out to be a lot larger and more chaotic than expected with an audience of about 150 people cramming into the relatively small venue. Cheers to the guys at UA for the pitch black room and the unforgiving strobelight.... We'll keep you updated with Zirconium events until a Zirconium website is up and running....

DIAL M FOR MONSTER

Nathan has joined Wellington's super-metal merchants MONSTERWORKS. The 'Works lost lead guitarist Ian Brock earlier this year so, after much shameless self-promotion, Nathan has successfully infiltrated the ranks... Check out the Monsterworks website for gigs, updates and stuff about the new album "Dimensional Urgency".

2001:09:17

CHERRYSTOCK! This is from the man himself, glazed.cherry@xtra.co.nz:

CherryStock 2001 is on October 21 (Sunday, Labour Weekend) at Donovan Park down here in Invercargill, it's a free gig that I've been putting together for the last 6 years and finally the elite of the town are supporting it and making it more accessible.

The line up thus far confirmed: Falciform, Indifference, Hatred, Choke, Kovu, Belial, Dead Man Walking, Asmordos, The Anals and No Fat Chicks through a nice 15-20,000 watts.
I've got some yet to confirm but 13 bands in all. There is a licensed area and we have like Markets, International Food Tent, Fun Park, Piercing, Skate Ramps etc etc. Venue is only 10 minute drive to the CBD.

The best way to promote bands this far South. Last year 2000 plus, This year hoping for up to 5000.

If anyone is keen to come down I can jack up cheap accomodation at this brand new backpackers in the CBD that's better than most motels I've stayed at.

2001:09:12

Those of you following along at home will be wondering what is happening with the gig with Skuldom we mentioned. Well, it's still happening but without us. So make sure you check out Skuldom, Malevolence, and Backyard Burial at Valve on October 20th.

2001:09:11

How embarrassing, such a long time between news updates! Well we've certainly got some news for ya now. We're heading South for the err, Spring.

We've been invited to play at CherryStock, a large (5000 people) festival in Invercargill on Sunday the 21st of October - Labour Weekend. So on the way down we're gonna play in Christchurch (Friday 19th) and Dunedin (Saturday 20th). These secondary gigs have not been 100% confirmed but we'll let you know when everything is sorted.

So this is your chance to see us down in the South Island, don't miss out!

In other news to hand, we've about 99% completed our CD and are currently investigating manufacturing and duplication costs. We are aiming to have everything sorted and ready to sell by the mission southwards (Labour Weekend) so it could well be that the Bogans of the South will be the first to be able to purchase the CD.

But don't worry, there will be a CD release party in Wellington, and we're planning a trip North as well to catch up with our Dawn of Azazel mates.

To fill you in with what happened in the Battle of the Bands, we didn't get through. No big suprises there. But we went Ultra-Hard, and got some really good comments back from the judges. A worthwhile exercise even if just to get some completely objective feedback on how we perform on stage.

2001:06:05

Mid-Winter Metal Mania was a great success.

We confirmed Cyanide about a week before the gig and they kicked it all off right on 10pm (Cheers guys!!) and played to a huge crowd of Wainuiomata characters who had come in just to see them, disappearing shortly after the last echoes of thrashiness faded.

Monsterworks up next had the benefit of Zombie footage in the background, and also sounded real good, Mark Hamill on the desk making sure everyone had a mean chest-pounding drum sound. I was liking the new one, with a bit of high pitched melody breaking into the Jono screams.

Then it was our turn, good to blast out “One False Move” to the large crowd who mostly hadn’t heard our latest effort before. A couple of little problems didn’t affect the overall performance which we were all happy with – better than the drunken party a few weeks ago, eh Hannibal Flanagan?

Unfortunately the video died sometime during our set, and the Horror scenes came to an end, but next was Dawn of Azazel… undoubtedly the fastest and heaviest NZ band I’ve heard to date, they blasted through some seriously extreme black/death/grind wall of noise metal including one damn speedy Slayyyyyeerrrrrr cover War Ensemble. A bit of a war theme going on there with gas masks and bullet belts, they were stoked to play to a decent amount of people moshing hard, and have invited us to Auckland some time to check out the allegedly sad state of affairs up there. So watch out for that, we’ll be up there soon to metal up a storm, and no doubt do a bit of serious drinking with these young metal maniacs.

Shakhan were on last, which proved to be a good spot, they had their usual following there to mosh hard and keep the place full and pumping right to the end of the gig.

Cheers to everyone involved, we recorded some of all the bands except Cyanide as we were having trouble getting sound out of the desk, sorry guys, but hopefully if we can get that sounding good we’ll make it available at some stage. Cheers again to everyone who made the effort to get there and go hard!!

Jason

2001:06:05

Things are shaping up for the gig on the 16th. We now have 4 confirmed bands, including Dawn of Azazel who are tripping down from Auckland especially. We are currently sussing out a fifth band so this is going to be one helluva night! Under the heading "Midwinter Metal Mania" expect to see Shakhan, MonsterWorks, Dawn of Azazel and us going hard all night long (well, just about) at Indigo on June the 16th.

See you there with a mosh on!
Kent (my new guitar! - the black and chrome one in the middle)

2001:05:21

Hey readers, we’re back again with another exiting news update… First of all the real news: We are playing on the 16th of June at Indigo Bar and Venue 171 Cuba Street Wellington. Probably with Monsterworks and Backyard Burial, but we don’t have many details at this stage… Watch this space!

Well we made it back from Oz in one piece, and what can I say… Cradle of Filth was the best metal gig I have ever been to. I didn’t have the money for Pantera this time around, but after the Filth… who cares! Unfortunately we missed the first band Psi-Kore, but Abramelin were fully massive. Grunty death metal, fast and blasty, with that wicked vocal roar. Off to the bar for the change over, then those evil keys screamed out of the sound system to dancing lasers, and we were treated to some mind blowing black metal. Although you couldn’t hear the guitar riffs so good, the drums were mean, the keys were awesome and Dani’s voice was chillingly evil. They did songs off every album, although only one from Cruelty, and only a couple off Dusk. But lots of older songs in there, and of course heaps off Midian. Most of them even cruised down to the bar and got down to drinking with the locals after the show.

Something like our next gig hopefully, eh?

Keep Supporting the Cause
Jason of Filthy Falciform

2001:05:02

Well it’s a long time since any news has been posted here so there’s a lot of news. The week before our last gig, on Saturday the 17th of March, there was a wicked metal gig at Indigo that we thought we’d chuck in a quick review of. First up on the night was Monsterworks. With Ryan back on the bass, the line up was back to what it was, although the hair somewhat shorter, and the ‘Works were sounding great blasting out some familiar favourites as well as some newer grinders. Mean blastbeats, churning riffage, and that killer Jono scream made for a wicked set, maybe in space no one can hear you mosh, but in the pit it was full f*ckin’ noise.

Next up was Shakhan, good to see them again before we played with them, a nasty set, very melodic, very metal. Nice harmonies boys! Getting to know some of those tunes quite well, “Clearlite” is always significantly faster live, these young bogans cranked the metal out nice and tight.

The headliners for the night were Saidaya. A very chunky sound from these Napier metalers, it was the second time I’ve seen them and it was good to see a few more originals chucked in there with the covers. That classic Marshall chug, that throaty roar, it was all good if a little slow for my tastes. The old groove death thing rumbled out of Indigo until the small hours, when some idiots thought it might be fun to start a fight. Didn’t see any of that, but apparently the perpetrators found themselves getting slightly pummelled in the end, good to hear.

Falciform, Shakhan, Backyard Burial - Valve Bar - 24/03/2001

The following week it was our turn. Shakhan opened the evenings festivities at about 10.30, they always get a big bunch of dudes in the door, unfortunately many seem to leave with the Shakka melodies.

Day One were playing up the road and one of the Backyard Burial guitarists was supporting them in another band and having us wondering if he was gonna make it down to the Valve, but no worries, the boys were setting up the camouflage net right on time. A brutal set from these guys, that psychotic singer caked in blood screaming like a boitch and growling like a psychotic caked in blood. Tuned way down to the pits of hell, masked up a la Friday the 13th, they blasted (and I mean BLASTED) out some filthy grind with precision and malevolence. VERY HEAVY.

After Backyard Burial had decimated the crowd and the stage (having left remnants of their fresh kill for all to see), we were up. You might even get to hear some of the live stuff soon, there’s also some pretty cool video footage which we might make available once we’ve got this upcoming CD out of the way. A great night. I even got a free Heineken, a big smile and “That was awesome!” from the sexy bar girl. Big ups to Shakhan, Backyard Burial, the Valve and the mighty Metal-heads who moshed up a storm (cheers Damon, you hard bastard!!!).

We were just offered a gig on 28 April at Indigo, they’re looking to have a bit of a Metal fest with heaps of bands including Shakhan and Saidaya, but who knows what will happen… we can’t do it because Nathan and I are off to Cradle of Filth in Sydney (yyeeeeaaaaaaahhhh!!!) but keep it in mind if you can get there. Adrian the Indigo man also spoke of Metal in May, for Indigo’s third birthday, so we might be playing then all going well. CD release is still a couple of months away, that last gig we decided to mostly play songs off the older recordings so long time fans could recognise them and mosh hard, but next gig expect some brand new Falci-Brutality.

Stay metal, ya greasy bastards
Jason

2001:03:05

Well here we are, at last Falciform has a website!

Here's the news you want to hear - We are playing at Valve Bar on March 24th with Shakhan and Backyard Burial. Our first gig in 4 months so be prepared for a brutal new cover and more of the same intense live show of old. It's great to have two other metal juggernauts from Wellington also on the bill.

The details again for the hard of hearing:

When
March 24th
Where
  Valve Bar
Vivian St
Wellington
Who

Falciform
Shakhan
Backyard Burial

Cost
  $5 at the door

Think of it as a taste of things to come. Undoubtedly Wellington suffers from a lack of metal gigs - so we are going to do something about it.

We also have some other great Falciform news for you, but there are still details to be worked out. To give you a hint, it might involve the words "new cd", "release gig", "good time had by all", and "Britney Spears in a pool of her own vomit". Or not.
